What is the CIPLE exam?
The CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) is an A2-level Portuguese language exam. It is required by most people applying for Portuguese citizenship or permanent residency. The exam tests basic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
What is the difference between CIPLE and CAPLE?
CAPLE (the Centro de Avaliação e Certificação de Português Língua Estrangeira, run by the University of Lisbon) is the body that administers Portugal's official Portuguese language exams and issues the certificates. CIPLE is one of those exams: the A2-level Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira, which is the level most people need for Portuguese citizenship or residency. Who needs to take this exam?
Most non-EU citizens applying for permanent residency or citizenship in Portugal need to demonstrate A2-level Portuguese proficiency. How long do CIPLE results take?
CAPLE does not publish a turnaround time for results, and candidates commonly report waiting between one and three months, because every paper is marked centrally in Lisbon. Results appear on the CAPLE classifications page and you look them up with your candidate code. The certificate is a separate step that follows 15 to 20 working days after the results are published.
What happens on CIPLE exam day?
The reading and written production paper takes 1 hour 15 minutes, listening takes 30 minutes, and the oral takes 15 minutes with each pair of candidates. CAPLE requires you to arrive 20 minutes before the start with the original identity document you registered with. The written and listening papers have published start times, but the oral slot is set by your exam center and is often only confirmed on the day.
